Everton vs Sunderland preview: Final home game for Everton as they chase Europe

  • Everton play their final home game against Sunderland
  • Sunderland have 11 clean sheets this season
  • The reverse fixture ended up 1-1 at Sunderland

Everton play their final home game of the 2025-26 season on Sunday when Sunderland visit Hill Dickinson Stadium. The Toffees are winless in their last five Premier League matches, which is their longest winless run of the season, with three draws and two defeats. It is also a run that has seen just one win in seven games.

This form has largely dented their European run, but it remains mathematically possible. Now only a victory will keep the dream alive.

Sunderland, meanwhile, have enjoyed a solid season. They have kept 11 clean sheets in the Premier League, a tally bettered only by Arsenal, Manchester City and Crystal Palace. They have also lost only one of their last five away league games. Goalkeeper Robin Roefs has kept ten clean sheets himself this term.

Recent meetings and team news

The reverse fixture at the Stadium of Light back in November ended 1-1, with Granit Xhaka and Iliman Ndiaye on the scoresheet. More recently, Sunderland knocked Everton out of the FA Cup in January, winning 3-0 on penalties at Hill Dickinson Stadium after a 1-1 draw in normal time.

Sunderland will be without centre-back Dan Ballard through suspension, while Romaine Mundle misses out with a thigh injury.

The head-to-head record favours Everton. The Toffees have won 82 of the 185 meetings, with Sunderland winning 70 and 33 draws. Everton have lost only two of their last 10 home league games against Sunderland, and the Black Cats have lost eight of their last 10 away Premier League matches against the Blues.

Key stats and what’s at stake

Everton are without a clean sheet in their last five games, a worrying stat for David Moyes. However, Beto has been in sensational form, scoring six goals in his last six Premier League appearances. He will be crucial if Everton are to break down a Sunderland defence that has been one of the league’s most resilient.

Where to Watch

The match will be televised on Sky Sports in the UK. For Everton, it is the final opportunity to play in front of their home fans this season and a last chance to keep their European hopes alive. A win would put pressure on the teams above them heading into the final day at Tottenham. Anything less, and the dream is over.

Prediction

Everton have the quality and the home support, but their recent form is a concern. Sunderland are organised and difficult to break down. Expect a tight contest, but I reckon Beto’s hot form will make the difference.

Everton 1-0 Sunderland

matchday.
