Three Everton transfer links that feel most likely to happen this summer

  • Everton have been linked with dozens of players already this summer.
  • Only a handful currently appear realistic options for David Moyes.
  • Read Everton assesses which rumours supporters should take seriously.

Just a few hours after Read Everton examined the lengthy list of players linked with a move to the Hill Dickinson during the opening weeks of the summer window, a more important question emerges.

Which of those rumours actually stand a realistic chance of becoming reality?

From established Premier League stars and Champions League regulars to emerging talents from across Europe, Everton have been credited with interest in dozens of players already. However, history suggests only a small number of those links will develop into serious transfer negotiations.

With that in mind, Read Everton has taken a closer look at the names most likely to fit David Moyes’ recruitment strategy and, crucially, the club’s financial realities.

Mukau and George a perfect fit?

At the top of the list is Lille midfielder Ngal’ayel Mukau.

The DR Congo international appears to tick many of the boxes Everton’s recruitment team are likely prioritising this summer. At 21, he offers youth, athleticism and significant development potential, while also possessing experience at a high level with Lille.

With Idrissa Gana Gueye entering the latter stages of his career, Everton need to begin planning for the future in midfield, and Mukau feels like a player who could form part of that succession plan.

Tyrique George is another name that should not be dismissed.

Unlike many of the players linked with Everton in recent weeks, the Blues already know exactly what they would be getting. The winger’s loan spell provided valuable insight into his potential, and any move would carry considerably less risk than signing an unfamiliar player from overseas. If Chelsea are prepared to negotiate, George remains one of the more realistic attacking options currently being discussed.

Defensive strengthening needed

Defensively, Georgios Vagiannidis continues to stand out.

Right-back has been an area Everton have sought to strengthen for some time and the Sporting CP defender appears to fit the profile of player the Friedkin Group and Moyes are likely targeting. He is young enough to improve, experienced enough to contribute immediately and, perhaps most importantly, appears attainable.

The same cannot necessarily be said for some of the more ambitious names.

Ben White would undoubtedly improve Everton’s squad, but any move would require a significant financial commitment. Similarly, links to Gabriel Jesus, Jarrod Bowen and Nathan Aké should probably be viewed with a degree of caution given the wages and transfer fees likely to be involved.

That is not to say those deals are impossible.

Three to watch…

However, Everton’s most successful windows in recent years have tended to come when the club identifies emerging talent before the rest of the market fully catches up.

For that reason, Mukau, George and Vagiannidis currently feel like the names supporters should watch most closely. They address genuine needs within the squad, fit the club’s evolving recruitment model and, unlike some of the headline-grabbing alternatives, appear to have a realistic pathway towards becoming Everton players.

As the summer unfolds, those links may ultimately prove far more significant than the ones generating the biggest headlines today.

matchday.
