Youngster Ledson leaves permanently

Young midfielder Ryan Ledson has left Everton permanently to join Oxford United on a three-year deal. Ledson, who rose through the academy ranks at Everton was tipped for a great future in the first team although never amounted to his potential.

Captain of the England U-17 team to win the 2014 European Championship, Ledson was expected to become the next big thing out of Everton’s academy which produced players such as Wayne Rooney and Ross Barkley, who captained Everton for the first time in their 4-0 victory over Yeovil in the EFL Cup this past week.

Having had a successful loan to Cambridge United, where he made 27 appearances last season, Ledson picked up great experience however with the emergence of the likes of Tom Davies and Kieran Dowell the youngsters place in the pecking order was lowered further and ultimately the young midfielder didn’t seem to have an immediate future with the club.

Ledson is joining an Oxford side looking to cement their place in League One this season. Captain John Lundstram, another former Everton academy product, will be no stranger to Ledson and will be sure to make him feel welcome in his new club.

Perhaps this is an opportunity for Ledson to restart his young career and progress and learn in the game bettering his ability as he goes. Still a young man there’s every chance that should he perform well in a lower league he may be rewarded with a return to a Premier League club.
