Swansea City reject Everton’s Williams bid

Swansea City may have scuppered Everton’s hopes of signing captain and defender Ashley Williams, with Wales Online reporting that The Swans have rejected the £10 million bid which would have seen the 31-year-old finally call time on his career at the Liberty.

As has been the case every year since Swansea won promotion to the top-flight in 2011, Williams has spent much of the summer being linked with a move away, with the money invested by Farhad Moshiri able to give the club new buying power. A deal seemed to be on the edge of completion to bring the defender to the blue side of Liverpool but has been torpedoed at the last minute by Swansea rejecting the bid out of the blue.

It’s believed that the Wales defender is keen on the move, but will now have to wait and see whether he’ll be able to complete his switch to The Toffees or whether he’ll begin the new campaign still in Swansea colours. He’s been a loyal servant to Swansea, playing 325 league games across three divisions, but reports suggest he wants a change of scenery.

Everton would have been able to give that to him, and it looked like The Swans were finally ready to cave after rejecting bids from the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal for the defender over the last few years. However, Francesco Guidolin sees the central defender as an integral part of his plans and has seen to it that the bid for Williams has been rejected. Whether Everton will renegotiate and seal the move remains to be seen.

matchday.
