Jagielka sidelined for more than two months

Everton captain Phil Jagielka could be set to miss more than two months of football according to The Liverpool Echo following a knee injury he suffered in the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal on Saturday.

The defender limped off the field during the game and now scans have confirmed the extent of the injury.

Speaking to the media ahead of Everton’s cup tie against Norwich tomorrow, Blues boss Roberto Martinez has said it is unclear how long he will be out for but it could be up to “eight or nine weeks”.

Martinez said:

We had really good news yesterday because after the game we expected the worst in the way the injury happened with the rotation of the knee, it could have been anything really.

Everton’s manager confirmed the injury:

We’ve had the scan and the medial ligament is affected and it’s an injury which is quite straight forward but there’s no other damage in the knee. The other structures are very strong. It’s the least it could be.

Jagielka’s injury will be a big blow for Everton, but the club are not short of defensive replacements. Ramiro Funes Mori is set to replace the Englishman.

Everton face Norwich City tomorrow in the Capital One Cup at Goodison Park. Roberto Martinez has said in his press conference that Baines, Hibbert and Pienaar are still out of contention.
