Fans slam Andre Gomes’ performance in defeat to Man Utd

Everton suffered a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United on Wednesday night, bowing out of the Carabao Cup at the quarter-final stage, and Andre Gomes was one of the players criticised by many supporters on social media for his performance.

The 27-year-old struggled to make an impact on the ball, spent most of the game chasing shadows in midfield and was eventually hooked in the 58th by Carlo Ancelotti, with Tom Davies taking his place.

Against Manchester United, the Portugal international had 20 touches, did not win any aerial duels, completed just 14 passes, failed to create a chance or record a tackle or interception, gave away two fouls and didn’t have a successful dribble. [WhoScored]

Gomes couldn’t get to grips with Bruno Fernandes and Ancelotti felt compelled to take him off just before the hour mark. He didn’t impose himself in the middle of the park and was guilty of hiding at times.

The 27-year-old has featured in 10 of Everton’s 18 games in all competitions this season, but he’ll need to do a lot better than last night to warrant keeping his place in the side.

These Toffees fans took to Twitter to lament Gomes’ latest performance:

In other news, Carlo Ancelotti has issued a cautious injury update on one Everton player.
