Everton’s interest in Pellegrini could see Sigurdsson’s Everton career end

Everton are interested in signing Roma midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini this summer, according to CalcioMercato (via Sport Witness), and his signing could spell the end for Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The 23-year-old central midfielder has impressed for the Giallorossi since completing a move from Sassuolo in 2017, and Carlo Ancelotti is understood to be keen to sign him.

Chelsea and Manchester United had both previously expressed an interest in the Italian international, although their respective interests have seemingly cooled.

Roma want to renew Pellegrini’s contract at the Stadio Olimpico as they wish to be rid of a €30million release clause, which Everton could yet take advantage of if they were to move with haste.

Should the Toffees push to sign the midfielder, Sigurdsson could be deemed surplus to requirements at Goodison Park.

While used in a traditional box-to-box role at Sassuolo, Pellegrini has played in an advanced position for Roma this season, assisting nine times in 18 Serie A appearances. Conversely, Sigurdsson has just two assists in 26 Premier League appearances, while both players have just the one goal to their name.

The Iceland international has provoked the ire of the Everton fan base on a number of occasions this season, and should Pellegrini be pursued further, there might not be any space left in the club’s squad for the former Swansea man.

As one of Everton’s highest earning players, Sigurdsson is expected to make more of an impact for the Blues than he currently does, and with Ancelotti keen on signing a midfielder in the summer, it seems as though Sigurdsson could be on borrowed time on Merseyside.
