Fans slam Gylfi Sigurdsson after Carabao Cup defeat

Gylfi Sigurdsson drew the ire of many Everton supporters for a mixed performance in the Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester United last night. He showed the odd glimpse of quality at Goodison Park but also struggled to contain his opposition.

The 31-year-old created opportunities over the 90 minutes and nearly scored himself, as well as turning over possession on a number of occasions. However, he and Everton faded after the restart, which led to United getting the breakthrough late on.

There have long been question marks over Sigurdsson’s defensive capabilities, and it’s telling that he didn’t make a single tackle on Wednesday. He had 56 touches, failed to win an aerial duel, completed 26 passes, created two chances and made three interceptions. He also lost possession 12 times on the night. [Sofascore]

Sigurdsson has made 17 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring two goals and supplying four assists. The 31-year-old has started in Everton’s last four games but his long-term future is still uncertain.
