Everton must have a replacement in mind if they let Cenk Tosun leave on loan

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored 14 goals in 18 appearances across the board this season, but Everton’s second-highest scorer Richarlison only has five goals from 14 games, so Carlo Ancelotti needs a better supporting act for the England target man.

Moise Kean was loaned out to Paris Saint-Germain for the season, so Ancelotti only has Cenk Tosun to call upon instead of Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison at centre-forward. The 29-year-old hasn’t scored a Premier League goal since January, so Ancelotti should perhaps identify an upgrade when the winter transfer window opens.

Tosun returned from injury in November but has only amassed 33 minutes of league football in the last two months, so it’s clear that he doesn’t have his manager’s trust.

Indeed, he was linked by the Sunday People (via West Brom News) with a potential loan move to West Brom next month in order to reinvigorate his career, having gone out to Crystal Palace for a spell in the equivalent window last season.

The Turkish international’s woeful scoring form in the last 12 months highlights why he is struggling for minutes at Goodison Park, but Everton have missed a trick by not replacing him in the summer transfer window.

Ancelotti doesn’t have a deep bench in Calvert-Lewin’s absence, so you would expect a striker to be on the agenda in the coming days and weeks.

Napoli’s Arkadiusz Milik and Reims’ Boulaye Dia are reported to be on Everton’s transfer radar, but the Toffees could find themselves linked with a lot of players next month.

Going another transfer window without signing a striker would only heap the burden on Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison to stay fit. While a loan exit for Tosun might be helpful, it should only be sanctioned if Everton have someone lined up to come straight in.

matchday.
