Roberto Martinez must sign a defensive coach or run the risk of losing his job, according to Stan Collymore.
The Catalan has come under intense pressure from Evertonians this season as the club face a second consecutive bottom-half finish in the Premier League.
The squad at hand has widely been suggested as the best at Goodison Park for years, a mixture of impressive young stars alongside heavily experienced Premier League proven players – the perfect mix?
But the Toffees have largely unimpressed this season as Martinez’s side faced a third consecutive defeat yesterday at Old Trafford, a loss which left them in 12th place – level on points with Premier League debutants Bournemouth.
In company with a disappointing league campaign, the arrival of majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri won’t have done Martinez any favours. Moshiri’s ambition, alongside his money, could be what sees Martinez lose his job.
Collymore wrote in the Mirror:
“Bill Kenwright and Moshiri should act now with Lukaku,”
“They should be on the front foot, sitting him down and outlining their plans. They should be telling him that they will splash out on top players and build a team round him, which will make the Champions League a viable and regular target.
“And they should be telling Martinez to go and get himself a defensive coach – or risk losing his job. I’m not advocating ditching Martinez because he’s got plenty of good qualities, but he needs to sort that defence out and, if it still isn’t working by Christmas, I’d bullet him.”
But Martinez may not be given until next Christmas, as his Everton side is on course for their worst league finish since the 2003/04 season.
Should Martinez be given the time to bring in a defensive coach for next season?
