Calvert-Lewin to join senior England squad to face Brazil

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is to join up with the senior England squad to face Brazil on Tuesday, alongside Liverpool forward Dominic Solanke.

This comes from a report in the Guardian, which states that Gareth Southgate is not afraid to take risks or make difficult decisions — which is just as well for the Three Lions, given the injury crisis they’ve found themselves in.

Seven players, including Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Jack Butland have withdrawn from the England squad with injury ahead of the side’s friendlies against Germany and Brazil — but instead of simply calling up a whole catalogue of more senior players, Southgate wants to test the waters with younger talent:

If we don’t try things now, when will we?

And it’s not just about Russia [next summer’s World Cup], it’s beyond that. Germany took a young team to the Confederations Cup. They are brave enough to take decisions which might get them results or might not. They are constantly evolving and that’s what we have to do.

Calvert-Lewin and Solanke will play for the Three Lions’ under-21 outfit as planned on Friday, and will watch on as Southgate’s men then take on world champions Germany.

The pair will then be incorporated into the senior side ahead of their game against Brazil on Tuesday night.

matchday.
