Barkley: I wasn’t coached much at Everton

Former Everton midfielder Ross Barkley has claimed ‘he hasn’t been coached much’ during his playing career.

The Metro report that Barkley, who is now at Chelsea, has been impressed by the way new boss Maurizio Sarri has opened his eyes to different ways of playing.

The 24-year-old has featured six times for the London club in the Premier League this season, having previously found game time difficult to come by under Antonio Conte.

The midfielder came through the ranks with the Toffees, having been born in Wavertree and joining the club at the age of 11.

Barkley moved to Chelsea at the beginning of 2018 for a fee of £15m having seen a move fall-through on the final day of the 2017 summer window.

The Englishman went on to make just two league appearances in the second half of the season, unable to find a way into Conte’s plans.

Conte was replaced in the summer by Sarri, and Barkley has spoken of the impact he has had in such a short space of time.

He said:

Over the years I haven’t really been coached much but I’m at an age now where I understand football a lot more and I know how important it is to take different tactics from different managers on board. Right now I’m ready to understand every aspect of the game.

Barkley is hopeful that a return to form could see him work his way back into England manager Gareth Southgate’s plans having been left out of the World Cup in Russia.

matchday.
