Everton linked with Colorado Rapids defender Lucas Herrington
  • Everton have reportedly joined the clubs monitoring Lucas Herrington
  • Barcelona, Napoli and AC Milan have also been credited with interest
  • At this stage, there is no indication Everton are preparing a move

Everton have been linked with Colorado Rapids defender Lucas Herrington following reports of interest in the 18-year-old centre-back.

Transfer ‘expert’ Ekrem Konur claims Barcelona have already had a bid rejected for the Australian youth international, while Everton, Napoli and AC Milan are among the clubs monitoring the situation.

For Evertonians, this is very much a story to keep an eye on rather than one suggesting immediate transfer activity.

There is currently no indication that Everton are preparing a bid or have entered discussions over a potential move. Instead, the report places the Blues among a number of clubs said to be tracking a young defender whose stock appears to be rising.

Another young player attracting attention

Herrington has broken into Colorado Rapids’ first-team picture at a young age and has represented Australia at youth level.

That combination alone is often enough to attract interest from clubs looking to identify emerging talent before a player’s value begins to climb.

Whether the reported interest from Barcelona develops into anything more substantial remains to be seen, but the suggestion that several European clubs are watching closely has inevitably brought additional attention to the defender.

Why the link makes some sense

While the report should be treated with appropriate caution, the profile itself is not entirely out of keeping with Everton’s recent recruitment direction.

Under The Friedkin Group, there appears to be a greater emphasis on younger players who can develop, improve and potentially increase in value over time.

Herrington would fit that description.

That said, centre-back is not currently viewed as Everton’s most pressing priority this summer. David Moyes is expected to focus heavily on strengthening attacking areas, while other positions also require attention.

As a result, any interest in Herrington is likely to be at an early stage.

For now, there is little concrete for Everton supporters to go on beyond the initial report. Whether Everton’s interest develops remains to be seen, but Herrington is another young player now being linked with some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
