Everton brought in Anton Donkor on loan from Wolfsburg during the January transfer window primarily to play for their U23 side but who knows, perhaps there was a long-term plan in place to sign him permanently for the first-team.
Unfortunately for the German youth international, he made just three appearances for the Toffees’ U23 team before suffering a season-ending ankle injury.
The 19-year-old has since returned to Germany for rehabilitation on his injury, but U23s coach David Unsworth seems to have opened the door to a possible return next season.
“All the scans were that he didn’t require the op but he is being rehabilitated back in Germany so we’ll pick that one back up again in the summer and see what we can do,” Unsworth is quoted as saying by the Liverpool Echo.
The initial loan contract including a purchasing option of £1.5m, a clause which Everton would certainly be interested in building into a second loan contract, if not triggering in the summer should they be willing to take the risk on Donkor.
