Former Borussia Dortmund and Denmark star Thomas Delaney has namedropped Everton as he discussed transfer rumours linking him with a move to England.
As shared on Twitter by Crystal Palace transfer news account PALACE XTRA (@cpfc_xtra), Delaney has revealed talk of a move to Crystal Palace came about courtesy of old rumours linking him to Everton.
The Denmark international, who featured for his country as they reached the semi-finals of Euro 2020, joined Sevilla over the summer from Dortmund in a £5.4 million deal after it became clear he was set for a more peripheral role in western Germany.
As per SportWitness, Crystal Palace were named among some of the suitors for his services as a move became increasingly likely, with Patrick Vieira’s side keen to replace and upgrade in midfield with a host of stars departing on free transfers over the summer.
However, Delaney spoke out on the speculation over a Premier League move and put the talk of a move to south London down to previous links with Everton.
“I think those expectations were based on an old story from my days in Bremen,” he told Kicker.
“At that time, Everton FC wanted to sign me, and in the course of that, I said that I would like to play in England, but also in the USA or Japan.
“The only thing was that it wouldn’t be possible to do all that.
“I later switched to BVB because it was the right move for me at the time. Just like it was the right thing to do now, to go to Sevilla.”

It looks as though there was little in the way of truth behind the rumours linking Delaney with a move to England.
However, it is interesting to hear directly from the midfielder that Everton were at one point in the hunt for his services.
Given his experience both for Denmark and at some of European football’s most recognisable clubs, Everton and their onetime interest demonstrates their ambition.
