Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has explained where Everton stand in relation to their pursuit of Netherlands international Denzel Dumfries.
The young PSV Eindhoven right-back has been tracked for some time by Everton scouts, with manager Roger Schmidt admitting that the defensive talent is a likely departure this summer.
Bayern Munich were also believed to be in the race for his signature but baulked at the prospect of paying the player’s €15 million release clause.
Speaking via his newly launched Twitch channel [04/07/21, via Goodison News], Romano issued the latest update regarding the pursuit of Dumfries as he discussed a myriad of rumours with viewers. Romano said:
“It’s gone quiet at the moment on Everton talks. Inter [Milan] are going for something different due to the high fee and their financial situation.”
Operating as a wing-back as part of a defensive quintet, Dumfries was a standout performer in Frank de Boer’s former side – despite an early Euro 2020 exit for the Dutch.
The defender scored twice in four games, including a dramatic late winner in the Netherlands’ 3-2 group stage victory over a spirited Ukraine side.

Energetic and with his prime years still ahead of him, Dumfries could be an ideal long-run replacement for club captain Seamus Coleman.
Noted for his high-intensity energetic style of play, his ability to utilise the right flank renders him a strong and potent presence both in defence and in attacking build-up play.
Dumfries cuts the mould of a complete wing-back and at just €15 million, his release clause represents superb value for money.
With the right-back role a priority for Everton this summer, Romano’s update will be an unwanted stall in fans’ hopes for the pursuit of Dumfries.
