Everton have taken to their official social media channels to celebrate the birthday of club captain Seamus Coleman on his birthday today. Signed from Sligo Rovers in February 2009 for a paltry £60,000, Coleman is virtually a one-club man following his long-running association with Everton.
He almost joined a fellow premier League side in Burnley before an injury curtailed the chance for him to impress – opening the way forward for Everton to swoop for the Donegal-born full-back.
He started his Premier League education with an apprenticeship in Everton’s reserves but by the 2009-10 season, his aptitude for the game began to shine brightly as he burst onto the stage for his new club.
He made a gruelling start to life at Everton when he was deployed on his debut in an unfamiliar left-back role in a 5-0 away mauling against SF Benfica, but the rest is history for the Toffees veteran.
He has made 313 appearances (41 as a substitute) for Everton and established himself both as a fan favourite and as a leader in the dressing room as a result.
With little in the way of another established senior right-back at the club, Coleman has had an unchallenged run at making the right-back position his own in recent months.
The club did target Dutch international Denzel Dumfries to compete with Coleman, but the former PSV Eindhoven star ended up completing a transfer to Inter Milan over the summer.
