Stekelenburg determined to remain Everton’s no.1

According to The Liverpool Echo, Maarten Stekelenburg is determined to nail down a starting position in Ronald Koeman’s Everton XI.

Everton are said to still be in the market for a new keeper, but Stekelenburg is not at Goodison Park to play backup to any other goalkeeper. The Dutch stopper had this to say about his goals at Everton;

At the moment I’m the No.1 and I plan to finish the season as No.1.

Former Dutch international Stekelenburg has only recently joined the Blues but is out to prove that he can be the man to bring stability to Everton’s defence. Stekelenburg is an extremely accomplished keeper having represented sides such as Southampton, Roma and Monaco and his experience was key to Everton earning a point against Spurs on the opening day of the season.

The Dutch stopper made two world class saves to ensure Everton hung on for a well-deserved point, and this was something Stekelenburg was eager to bring up when talking about his ambitions for the coming season.

I don’t know what else is happening but that is not in my hands. The only thing I can do is what I did today.

With Everton reportedly interested in bringing England and Manchester City keeper Joe Hart to L4, Stekelenburg will have to keep producing world class displays if he is to nail down the starting position for Ronald Koeman’s side. Whatever does indeed happens, one thing is for sure, Everton are going in the right direction on the goalkeeping front.
