According to the Daily Mail, Wayne Rooney will face Everton in his Manchester United testimonial, one week before the beginning of next season.
The former Everton prodigy, who left the Blues for around £27million in 2004, has chosen to face the club he supports as he celebrates his illustrious career at Old Trafford.
Everton boss Roberto Martinez reluctantly agreed to the occasion after being persuaded by Rooney, the Catalonian didn’t want Everton to face a Premier League rival just days before the season kicks off, but has softened his stance, with the tie due to be played on August 3.
The money from the testimonial will be divided up into four charities, chosen by Rooney.
Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, the Claire House Hospice, Manchester United Football Club Foundation and the NSPCC are all set to receive a substantial cash injection from the game, which is likely to be shown on television.
It remains to be seen if Rooney will don the royal blue of Everton like he did last year for Duncan Ferguson’s testimonial at Goodison Park, but it hasn’t been ruled out.
