Read Everton understands that despite reports to the contrary, James McCarthy is unlikely to hand in a formal transfer transfer request.
Speculation surrounding the future of the Everton midfielder has mounted in recent days after an article published by online website Goal suggested that the 24-year-old would look to leave the Merseyside outfit after the club reneged on an agreement to improve the terms of his contract. This report prompted several other national newspapers, including the Express, to run with the story, which in turn further intensified speculation linking the former Wigan man with a move away from Goodison Park.
However, it is believed that McCarthy enjoys a positive relationship with managerial team Roberto Martinez and Graeme Jones after working with the pair at Everton and Wigan, and the Irishman is unlikely to be perturbed by Tom Cleverley’s Bosman arrival.
“It is new to me if a club is going to come in and buy me in the summer. I have not spoken to anyone,” said McCarthy, in an interview with the Guardian back in April.
“The media has done a few stories but I am delighted to be here and I have many years still to come.”
While McCarthy is unlikely to tell the club he wants to leave, it is understood that agent Willie McKay has been something of a destabilising influence behind the scenes, as the Scot looks to engineer his client a move to a Champions League side. Indeed, Manchester United, Tottenham and Arsenal have all been credited with an interest in the talismanic midfielder in recent months.
