As contract uncertainty surrounding the future of Marcel Brands continues to swirl, Everton have identified a key man to replace him.
Director of Football Marcel Brands, whose role involves (among other duties) overseeing the Toffees’ transfer operations, is out of contract in the summer. Given he brought players in from European giants in James Rodriguez and Allan from Real Madrid and Napoli respectively, losing his insights would be a significant blow.
Brands has been linked to the Director of Football role with a host of European giants, such as Manchester United and previously with Serie A side AS Roma.
Consequentially, the Everton board has identified Icelandic former Bolton player and current chief scout Gretar Steinsson, according to the print edition of Sunday 6th December’s The Sun (page 59).
This move is designed to offer a sense of internal insurance against being left without an overseer of recruitment, thus dampening the club’s ability to be effective in fulfilling its long-term vision across a number of transfer windows.

This contingency plan is smart for a number of key reasons.
Principally, it prevents the club being left in limbo without a senior figure to direct transfer operations – offering certainty in future windows.
Moreover, promoting internally is a key element of shrewdness; Steinsson will evidently hold familiarity with the club’s practices, vision and structure rendering him as a natural fit for the role.
His scouting experience only bolsters his suitability in what would be a formidable backup option available to the club.
