No Silva lining as Norwich earn their first away win of the season

Norwich picked up their first away win of the season with a 2-0 win over Everton at Goodison Park, thanks to goals from Todd Cantwell and Dennis Srbeny.

Norwich, who hadn’t scored away from home since the opening day, had the best chance of the first half through Onel Hernandez.

The Cuban wide man raced through the centre of the pitch one v one against Jordan Pickford, but the Everton keeper got low to his right side and denied the visitors the lead.

0-0 at half time and if you didn’t know anything about football you would not know which team was bottom of the league as the football that was on show was very poor.

The second half was an improvement, but that was only because we had some goals. Norwich went to Goodison Park with a game plan to frustrate the hosts and look to counte, and they did exactly that. A long ball was flicked on to Teemu Pukki, he held off the challenges of both Mason Holgate and Yerry Mina and played the ball through to Todd Cantwell who walked past Morgan Schneiderlin 20 yards from goal. He carried the ball into the area and slotted the ball past Pickford to give the visitors the lead.

Marco Silva immediately made a change sending on Alex Iwobi for Schneiderlin hoping that this attacking change would get things going, but that never really happened as Norwich had another chance to make it 2-0 five minutes later.

A free-kick out wide went over everybody to an unmarked Sam Byram in the six-yard box and unfortunately for him he got his diving header all wrong. Another let-off for Everton, and five minutes later another change from Silva.

This time Theo Walcott and Djibril Sidibe coming off for Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Seamus Coleman, and it was the Everton captain Coleman that made an immediate impact, whipping in a delightful ball across the area only for every Everton player to be the wrong side of the ball.

Everton looked to create chances, but Norwich’s defence stood their ground and on the occasion that Everton did get through, Tim Krul was equal to everything Everton threw at the Norwich keeper.

With time ticking away, Norwich manager Daniel Farke instructed his players to run the clock down at every chance, going down for fouls, taking time on free-kicks and goal kicks and in doing so the referee added on five minutes of stoppage time for Everton to somehow snatch a point, but it was a last-minute substitute that ended all hopes when he made it 2-0 in the 92nd minute.

Gylfi Sigurdsson tried to win the ball back on the edge of his own area, and in doing so played the ball straight to the feet of Srbeny, and with only Pickford, in his way he slotted the ball into the back of the net saluting the Norwich fans as he celebrated.

As the referee blew for full time the Everton fans that had stayed made it clear what they thought about their team’s performance as boos rang out and made themselves heard, demanding for Marco Silva to be shown the door.
