Everton Could Sign Nikola Maksimovic on a Free Transfer

As Everton continue their search for defensive reinforcements, one name has emerged as an exciting and cheaper alternative to reported target Samuel Umtiti.

According to an update from the Liverpool Echo, Napoli centre-back Nikola Maksimovic could move to Goodison Park in a free transfer at the end of the current campaign. There is also the possibility that Napoli could potentially sanction a sale for the player in order to avoid missing out on a transfer fee for the 29-year-old Serbia international.

In a further boost for the Toffees, Maksimovic himself is said to be keen on the move due to the stature of current Blues manager Carlo Ancelotti. Speaking via Sport Witness, Italian journalist Ciro Venerato confirmed that Maksimovic will be set for release this summer, claiming:

He could most likely go away. There are rumours but Napoli have made it clear that the relationship with the player will not continue if the player’s requests remain the current ones.

Makismovic will be released in June. To date, the player is still a fan of Ancelotti and could be a great opportunity for Everton, who could take him on a free transfer.

Although slightly older than Umtiti, Maksimovic remains an exciting prospect for the Toffees to sign. At 29, the Serbian boasts plenty of top-level senior experience but could still have several years ahead of him in his career.

He could add structure and discipline to Everton’s defence and his role as an outcast at Napoli is not any great fault on his part. Napoli boast the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly and Kostas Manolas as their centre-back regulars, meaning that competition for places is fierce. He really could be a ‘great opportunity’ for the Toffees if Umtiti is deemed unsuitable.
