Everton had a rather busy summer transfer window in terms of the number of deals in which they were involved.
Several of those involved signing or selling players to and from some of their fellow Premier League clubs. One deal in particular which falls into this category and is already looking a masterstroke is their move for Neal Maupay.
Towards the end of the summer, the Toffees secured a three-year deal for the striker, who has 92 goals to his name throughout his career, from Brighton & Hove Albion.
Even though he couldn’t help his team secure a win over Liverpool on his Toffees debut, the 26-year-old got off the mark in his latest outing for Frank Lampard’s side by scoring the winning goal in Everton’s 1-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday, giving the Goodison Park outfit their first league win of the season.
In addition, the former Brighton star made a real nuisance of himself for the Hammers, as he not only completed 27 of his 29 attempted passes but also drew three fouls, showing how tricky an opponent he can be.
To further highlight how impressive he was against David Moyes’ side, the Liverpool Echo‘s Chris Beesley was hugely complimentary about his performance. He said that Maupay “worked hard to link up play before his goal and then dispatched [sic] a moment of inspiration to break the deadlock with a smart turn and finish that displayed the predatory instincts that Everton’s attack has been missing.”
Bearing in mind how Lampard’s side have been without Dominic Calvert-Lewin this season through injury, having a player like the Frenchman available to fill in has now proved to be a very useful option for the Toffees.
Although it’s still early days into the season and into Maupay’s time at the club, it’s beginning to look like securing a deal for him last month has been a great move by Lampard and co.
Having been described as an “exceptional” signing for Brighton by journalist Andy Naylor earlier this year, there’s no reason why the French marksman can’t be the same for Everton.
