Kevin Campbell endorses possible Everton move for Serge Aurier

Pundit and former Everton hitman Kevin Campbell has insisted that the club could make a move for free agent Serge Aurier to alleviate issues at right-back.

The Toffees are left with a depth problem with out-and-out senior right-backs following an injury sustained by club captain Seamus Coleman on international duty.

The club does have Jonjoe Kenny at the club, but the defender appears to be out of favour at Goodison Park following an unsuccessful loan spell at Celtic last season.

Kenny is yet to feature in the Premier League this season, although he could be called upon following his full feature against Huddersfield in Everton’s 2-1 Carabao Cup win.

Mason Holgate and Ben Godfrey have also deputised in the role in the past, though Campbell has backed an alternative solution.

Experienced Ivory Coast international Serge Aurier was recently released by parent club Spurs, and Kevin Campbell backed him to be a potential option for Everton as he spoke to Goodison News:

“That might be another thing for Serge Aurier on a free.

“Coleman has been such a fantastic performer, a stalwart for Everton but the injuries just keep racking up.

“The best ability is availability as a footballer, and the manager needs his players available – Seamus is well thought of, but if you’re not available, you’re no use.”

The Express have also linked the Ivorian with Goodison Park and he could yet be an option for Rafa Benitez.

Captaining his country, Aurier boasts 110 games for Spurs with appearances in the Premier League and at Champions League to his name.

This suggests a proven record of reliably featuring at the highest level.

However, if availability is Campbell’s concern then there remain question marks: he missed 11 games with injury last season, although only one period was prolonged in terms of days absent.

He could nonetheless remain a viable and freely available defender to supplement existing options.
