Everton must secure new deal for Jordan Pickford

Everton supporters have not had the best relationship with their club’s ownership in recent times.

Specifically, there were some fan protests over the summer which highlighted the fans’ disdain for Farhad Moshiri’s ownership and the way their club has been run.

In February, the club hired Kevin Thelwell as their director of football following the departure of Marcel Brands.

One thing he could do which would surely please a lot of Toffees supporters is to secure a new contract for one of the club’s most important players in Jordan Pickford.

In June, it was reported that the club are looking to offer the England international an extended contract, even though his current deal isn’t set to expire until 2024. The Athletic‘s David Ornstein then reported on Monday that the goalkeeper is among three players whose futures Everton are determined to secure.

This shows just how highly the 28-year-old is valued by the club and how much they want to keep hold of him.

Pickford joined Everton from Sunderland five years ago in a then club-record deal worth £30m. Since then, the shot-stopper – who is currently picking up a wage of £100k-per-week – has gone on to make 205 appearances for the Merseyside club across all competitions.

This season has seen the 28-year-old show how valuable he is to Frank Lampard’s side, as only one other goalkeeper in the league has posted a higher save percentage than the Englishman’s 83.9%.

In fact, his overall performances have earned him an early season rating of 7.26/10, making him the highest-rated player at Everton to have started more than one league game according to WhoScored.

Having “done wonders” for the Toffees according to Marcus Bent, this all shows why the club would be right to secure Pickford’s future and keep him at Goodison Park for as long as they can.

If Everton are able to persuade the goalkeeper to sign an extended deal, this may not fully remove the negativity that some fans have for Moshiri, but it would certainly please a lot of them and alleviate any potential concerns over the 28-year-old’s future.
