Jones: “Lukaku Can Only Get Better”

Everton assistant manager Graeme Jones insists striker Romelu Lukaku will become a predator in front of goal next season.

The Belgian forward scored 20 goals last season, the first Toffee to do so since Yakubu back in 2008.

In his two seasons at Goodison Park, the 22-year old has notched up 36 goals for the Merseyside club.

Jones knows that the team need to supply their talismanic striker as much as possible next season, but claims he will work tirelessly on the training ground in help make him an even greater feared prospect for Premier League defenders.

Jones explained to Everton TV. “Rom is world-class. He can hurt anybody – he is a goal machine.

“If we can feed him a little bit more, which will be the idea next season, there will be more goals to come from him.

“With Rom, we’ve spoken quite a lot about his back-to-goal play – it’s not something that comes natural to him, even though he has improved this season. Rome wasn’t built in a day and it takes time.

“We concentrate on his strengths – he’s 6ft 3in and 16 stone, lightning quick and if he gets it on that left foot, it will more often than not end up in the back of the net.

“With any player, they have strengths and weaknesses, and Rom is more aware of them than anybody else.”

Earlier in the summer, speculation mounted over Lukaku’s future after the striker claimed he wanted to be winning major league titles at this sage of his career.

Such talk has been played down recently, and Jones now feels that the Belgian can kick on with preparations for another season at Goodison Park.

“We are excited – he has only just turned 22,” added Jones.

“He is a unique footballer, technically and his attitude. His mental strength and approach to the game is exceptional. We are lucky that we have got a player of that calibre at this football club.”
