Everton summer signing Ben Godfrey has illustrated how his hunger and desire to improve his game affects his approaches in training and on the pitch.
Ben Godfrey made his full Everton debut out of position at right-back in Everton’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Southampton – their first of the season.
Carlo Ancelotti claimed Everton will summon their reserves of “spirit and belief and attitude and ambition” in response in order to deliver a positive reaction to losing this season’s unbeaten Premier League record at Southampton.
The England Under-21 international played the full 90 minutes as a full-back against the Saints, but his back-line saw two goals conceded.
Godfrey revealed his hunger to improve with each game and training session at Everton – and outlined his belief the Blues can embark on another strong run of form.
“I use every single occasion I can to learn,” said Godfrey.
“I’ll always give 100 percent for the team.
“Right-back’s obviously a different position for me, but I’m enjoying my football. It’s just a shame I couldn’t top off my first start for Everton with a win.
“But we can’t let that result damage our confidence.
“Overall, we’ve had a good start to the season and we can’t let this get us down.
“We’ve got to move on swiftly and take our good start to the season into the next fixtures.”
Despite the defeat, Everton remain at the top of the Premier League table as they look to resume winning ways against Newcastle United.

Godfrey’s stoic ambition to improve is refreshing and needed. The Everton squad will need to resume their run of victories if they are to avoid falling into a downwards spiral.
Godfrey’s can-do attitude and confidence will serve him well as he looks likely to fill in again at full-back against Newcastle.
Exhibiting humility, Godfrey accepted that right-back was not a comfortable or familiar position – though if he lives up to his own words, he may well take on a new level of versatility.
