Everton have secured the signing of the summer in Andros Townsend, usurping even the signing of Cristiano Ronaldo by Manchester United as the deal most worth talking about, according to Frank McAvennie.
The former Celtic and West Ham man waxed lyrical about the former Newcastle and Crystal Palace winger as he discussed the meteoric rise in form being enjoyed by the experienced attacker.
The 30-year-old was signed on a free transfer following his summer release from Crystal Palace and has since gone on to strike up a formidable tally of eight direct goal contributions in nine Everton appearances.
Swiftly becoming the cornerstone of Rafa Benitez’ new-look Everton team, Townsend continues to lead the table of direct goal contributions out of all his teammates at the club.
As a result, he is almost averaging one goal involvement per 90 minutes with his latest strike securing a point away from home at Old Trafford against Manchester United.
Consequentially, McAvennie feels Townsend is the signing of the season across the league – not least for the value for money being enjoyed by Everton.
Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie said:
“He’s been unbelievable.
“One of the best players so far this season, the stats don’t lie. The signing of the summer so far, better than the likes of Ronaldo or Lukaku.
“It speaks volumes about confidence. We never saw him do this at Palace.
“I remember him having a decent spell at Newcastle but I don’t think he was ever this good.
“The key is keeping it going all season. If he does keep this form up he will be one of the players of the season, no doubt.”

Townsend is proving seniority is anything but a burden and has aged like fine wine.
He is consistently productive in front of goal for Everton – something that is vital if the Blues are to continue their momentum in a bid to challenge for European football next season.
