With what most Everton fans would call another painful watch, you would think trying to select Three Stars would be a difficult task. Granted super nova would be more suitable to the team performance and to that of certain individuals. For me, however, there were at least three twinkles of light to come out of the defeat at Watford.
With the weight of expectation resting heavily on the shoulders of some at the club, it would seem we are learning a lot about the players and even the manager.
It was another defeat, 1-0, to Watford, a team who fancy themselves as a rival for the, “best of the rest cup”. With the league table in mind, I can guarantee most fans will be asking questions, one of which has to be, who should stay and who should go?
It wasn’t a great day for the Blues, but here are the three players who performed best for Marco Silva.
Bernard
Unlike his Brazilian teammate, who he replaced around the hour mark, there isn’t a steep transfer fee to add to the expectation. Bernard doesn’t have the goal or assist stats that Richarlison has, but again, he showed his qualities across the forward line. His inconsistency putting dangerous balls into the box frustrates at times but his cross into the box at the dying minutes of the game could have resulted in a finish for Everton to gain an arguably deserved draw.
Kurt Zouma
After reading comments from Troy Deeney prior to the match, I’m sure some fans were hoping the players would come out and fight for the Royal Blue Jersey. Unfortunately, most players missed the memo but Zouma, who came head to head with Deeney on a few occasions ,certainly didn’t. Picking up a yellow card for confronting the referee after a clash with the Watford forward, the on-loan defender showed a passion you’d expect from an Everton player. What most people missed, however, was the second yellow card, after the final whistle which will sadly see him miss the next game.
Tom Davies
If I’m to credit passion and spirit, then nobody in the team came close to what Tom Davies offered today. Going against a bigger and more physical midfield, Davies showed a maturity beyond his years. Some may argue the young captain is best helping the transition to attack and I’d agree but Davies managed to be all over the pitch today. With what you could call a captain’s performance, it was worrying that other players didn’t gain inspiration.
