Everton saw numerous players coming to Goodison Park during the summer transfer window.
Some of those, such as Conor Coady, James Tarkowski and Dwight McNeil, all came in from fellow English clubs. However, one player that the Toffees were unable to sign from a Premier League rival and who we feel Kevin Thelwell will regret missing out upon is Brighton & Hove Albion attacker Leandro Trossard.
In August, it was reported that the Merseyside club had an interest in signing the Belgian before the transfer window closed.
Brighton signed Trossard during the summer of 2019 in a £15m deal. Since then, the 27-year-old has scored 20 goals and supplied 13 assists in 110 appearances across all competitions.
This season has seen the Belgian show what the Toffees could have had if they were able to sign him, as the Brighton star has scored two goals and provided two assists in six league appearances. To further highlight his attacking prowess, Trossard currently has the second-highest average of shots (2.2) and key passes per game (1.8) at Brighton.
His overall performances have earned the winger an early season rating of 7.07/10 from WhoScored, making him the third-highest rated player at the south coast club.
This would make him the second-highest rated outfield player at Everton behind James Tarkowski (7.1/10), which showcases just how impressive a signing he would have been for the Toffees if they has been able to bring him in.
Praised by Alan Shearer for a “magnificent” goal he scored against Brentford last September, Trossard certainly seems to have the credentials and experience to have helped Frank Lampard’s side potentially have more than just the one league win that they boast at this stage of the campaign.
Taking all this into account, we feel that Thelwell and Everton should have done more to try and get the winger out of Brighton and up to Goodison Park during the summer transfer window, and the Toffees chief must now be regretting not doing so.
