Everton target Smalling reveals he would be open to Roma stay

Reported Everton target Chris Smalling has revealed that he would be open to remaining with loan club Roma beyond the end of the season.

The 30-year defender has spent the season on loan in the Italian capital from Manchester United, and talking to BBC Sport, the centre-back has explained that he would be open to staying with the Giallorossi.

Corriere dello Sport reported last week that both Everton and Spurs have been in contact with United and with Smalling’s representatives over doing business in the summer.

The report claimed that while Smalling has fallen in love with Rome, that the Italian club would likely be unable to afford the England international without Champions League qualification, meaning a permanent move looks unlikely.

However the defender has revealed that he would be keen on a permanent stay with Roma. Asked if he wanted to stay by BBC Sport, Smalling said:

Yeah, I think the plan at the start of the season was to contribute as much as I can and then hopefully if we’ve all had a good season and hit our ambitions then those discussions can take place.

I’ve been more than happy with my first half of the season, it’s now just making sure that we kick on and finish the season strongly because we have a lot to play for.

Coming over here and trying to hit ground running with football was the priority. But my family settling in and me learning the language and enjoying the culture, it’s something you need to make the most of.

My family and I definitely are.

Should Smalling’s preference still be to remain in Rome by the end of the season, Manchester United may also prefer to compromise and let him stay, as it could be more beneficial than strengthening one of their immediate rivals.

Smalling’s form has been much improved this season though, so United may elect to keep him at Old Trafford next season, which could see all three interested parties miss out.

Everton are in need of defensive reinforcements, with the club still having just three senior options in Mason Holgate, Yerry Mina and Michael Keane, and Smalling would represent an experienced option who could add depth to Ancelotti’s squad, something that might prove crucial if the club are to earn Europa League qualification this season.
