A slow but stable display from the Blues over in Croatia tonight as we sealed qualification to the Europa League against Split. We started the night looking very shaky indeed as Split had two early chances but were kept out by Jordan Pickford. We then started to dominate the game with Wayne Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson making sure that we were never without the ball for too long. The defence held off the limp Hajduk attack with Ashley Williams in particular having a stellar first 45.
Another standout performer in a controlled first half was Mo Bešic, making his first Everton start in what seemed like a lifetime.
But then the second half came around and Gylfi Sigurdsson opened his account with an absolute missile from 40 yards. There’s not much I can say about that one that hasn’t been said, and most of what I would scribe would be very unsuitable for this introduction. I’ll leave it to Twitter and their myriad of GIFs.
We were poor overall in the second half, with very little attacking intent but it meant nothing.
We’re in Europe.
