Everton are reportedly considering a sensational move for Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani, and will meet with the French club’s officials to discuss a transfer in the coming days, according to Tuttomercatoweb.
The Toffees, who sold star striker Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United for £90million this summer, failed to adequately replace the man who scored 25 league goals last term.
Now, amid rumours linking the club to former targets Raúl Jiménez and Olivier Giroud, PSG’s Cavani has emerged as a major shock target.
The 30-year old Uruguayan is regarded as one of the world’s best forwards. Cavani has almost 100 caps for his country, and has a sensational scoring record with PSG, scoring an incredible 49 goals in 50 games last season in all competitions, with 35 coming in 36 Ligue 1 games.
With Neymar having joined the Parisian club in the summer from Barcelona, reports have suggested a rift has emerged between the two South American players, and PSG are reportedly interested in moving Cavani on in January.
While it’s certainly hard to imagine Everton pulling off such an incredible deal, Spanish newspaper Marca reported last weekend that the Toffees had attempted an audacious £66million late move for Diego Costa, only to be rejected by the player.
With funds seemingly available to make a marquee signing, the difficulty lies in convincing Cavani to join a club without Champions League football, ahead of a host of other prospective clubs, including the player’s former club Napoli.
According to Rai Sport, as cited in Tribal Football, PSG have asked for €70million (approximately £61.5million) for Cavani.
The forward is contracted until 2020.
