Everton must cut ties with Yerry Mina

Everton had somewhat of a clearout in their squad since the end of their previous Premier League season.

In addition to cashing in on Richarlison, the Toffees also saw the likes of Fabian Delph, Jonjoe Kenny and Cenk Tosun make moves away from the Merseyside club.

While the summer window may have closed, one figure currently in Frank Lampard’s squad that we feel the club and the manager should look to get rid of either in January or when the next summer transfer period comes around is Yerry Mina.

Everton signed the defender back in the 2018 summer transfer window from Barcelona in a deal worth £27.2m.

Since then, the Colombian has made 92 appearances for the Toffees across all competitions, chipping in with seven goals along the way.

A big issue that has plagued the centre-back since his arrival at Goodison Park is the number of injuries he’s had, making him somewhat of a liability.

According to Transfermarkt, Mina, who is currently out injured with an ankle issue, has missed a total of 51 matches since making his debut for the club in November 2018 and spent 379 days out of action through injury since January 2019.

This shows the unreliability the 27-year-old carries and is presumably why the club felt the need to bring in Conor Coady and James Tarkowski during the recent summer transfer window.

Even when he has been fit enough to get on the pitch, the defender has come under some scrutiny and criticism, as his reaction to being involved in a collision with Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford in August last year was described as an “embarrassment” by Jeff Stelling and “pathetic” by Michael Dawson.

Bearing in mind how Mina is currently Everton’s highest earner with a weekly wage of £120k-per-week, it would seemingly be in the club’s best interest from a financial point of view to get the defender out of the club and off the wage bill, especially if he isn’t getting the time on the pitch to earn those wages.
