Everton may profit as Robinson attracts Premier League interest

Everton could be set to receive a small sell-on fee as Premier League interest in former Toffees defender Antonee Robinson heats up, according to Mirror Sport.

AC Milan looked set to complete a £10million transfer for the United States international last month, just six months after the defender joined Wigan for £1.98million.

However, the late move to Italy collapsed, forcing Robinson to return to the DW Stadium (BBC Football).

The Liverpool Echo had reported late last month that due to a sell-on clause, Everton would have been set to receive a small percentage of the transfer fee if Wigan had sold the 22-year old full-back to the Rossoneri.

According to Mirror Sport’s latest report though, Everton could still be set to profit, with Chelsea, Aston Villa and Newcastle all said to be interested in a summer move for Robinson, while the outlet speculates that others could be interested too.

Should Robinson leave the Latics in the next transfer window, Everton will once again be entitled to a small share of the sum that Wigan receive.

While a prospective deal to take Robinson away from Wigan does speak to the importance of sell-on clauses, it does also beg the question as to why Everton were so quick to sell the defender last summer.

Lucas Digne is the firm favourite to play left-back at Goodison Park, but with Leighton Baines approaching the end of his career, Robinson could have been a solid back-up for the Frenchman, both in the current season and in the long-term.

Should Robinson make the move to the Premier League, hopefully Everton won’t be left feeling that they made a great mistake in letting him go.
