Everton have joined Arsenal and Leicester City in registering an interest in Gent forward Jonathan David, according to Jeunes Footeux.
The 20-year old striker has been in electric form for the Belgian outfit this season, scoring 17 times in 24 Belgian First Division A appearances, while also assisting on eight occasions.
The Canada international’s form has subsequently seen him become a target for a number of teams across the continent, with Jeunes Footeux reporting that Napoli, RB Leipzig, Lyon and Roma are all interested, as well as the Premier League trio.
Transfermarkt current value David at £18million, but Jeunes Footeux speculate that the significant amount of interest in his signature will likely see Gent’s valuation rise.
Whether Gent do indeed demand a higher fee for their talented starlet or not, David is one player who we believe Everton should not consider moving for this summer.
While the Canadian has played in a variety of positions this season, leading the line, playing off the shoulder and sitting behind the striker, he could only serve to add further competition to Everton’s striking options.
The Toffees currently have Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Richarlison and Moise Kean all jostling for a starting berth, with Carlo Ancelotti favouring a formation that incorporates two strikers.
At this moment in time, Calvert-Lewin is Everton’s principle goalscorer, ensuring he keeps his spot in the lineup, while Richarlison’s energy and work rate always sees him contribute, both directly and indirectly to Everton cause.
Kean, just 19, is regarded as a huge prospect, and Ancelotti will hope to see him continue to improve as he settles more and more into the Premier League way of life.
Should Everton sign a striker in the summer, it could only serve to hurt Kean’s position in the team.
If David was to move to Goodison Park, Kean’s opportunities may diminish, which in turn could see Everton lose out on a potential star in the making.
In that sense, Everton could benefit from letting someone like Arsenal or Leicester sign David this summer.
While they may lose out in the short-term, they could greatly benefit in the long-term, should Kean be allowed and able to live up to his vast potential.
