Everton have been handed a potential injury boost ahead of their upcoming Premier League clash against Southampton after the current international break.
According to a recent report from the Liverpool Echo, Toffees striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin could be involved in the upcoming match against Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side after being out of action since August with a knee injury.
The report then had this to say on the matter: “The ECHO understands the Blues are being cautious with the striker after he felt some tightness in a session at Finch Farm. However, it’s not believed to be being treated as an “injury” as such, and he could still be in the squad when Frank Lampard’s side return to action at the beginning of October.”
Last season saw the Englishman struggle with injury issues but still managed to score five goals and deliver two assists in 17 league appearances.
To further highlight his attacking prowess, the 25-year-old ended the previous campaign with the second-highest rate of goal-creating actions per 90 minutes (0.28) and the joint-highest rate of shots on target per 90 minutes (0.77).
Bearing in mind how Everton currently have the lowest rate of goals per shot on target in the division this season (0.13), having a player like Calvert-Lewin back in the side should be just what Lampard needs to get his side firing.
Also, with the Goodison Park outfit yet to score more than one goal in any of their seven Premier League games this season, the Englishman’s presence could see Everton become a bigger goalscoring threat as a team.
Moving forward, if the striker is 100% fit enough to play against the Saints, then Lampard should definitely put him in the starting XI so he can finally get his season up and running and hopefully help his team secure another victory.
