Everton reportedly had an interest in signing Southampton winger Nathan Redmond before the recent summer transfer window closed.
According to a recent report from The Athletic, the Toffees, alongside fellow Premier League clubs Wolverhampton Wanderers and AFC Bournemouth, were interested in securing a deal for the player, who is apparently set to join Turkish club, Besiktas.
In 232 appearances for Southampton, the Englishman scored 30 goals and delivered 27 assists in the process.
In our view, Everton and their director of football, Kevin Thelwell, avoided a potential howler by not securing a deal for the 28-year-old.
Last season saw Redmond, who was picking up a weekly wage of £60k-per-week at St. Mary’s, make 27 league appearances for the Saints but only managed to find the back of the net on one occasion.
In fact, with just 25 shots at goal throughout the campaign, this was 40 fewer than Demarai Gray had and 45 fewer than Richarlison had at Everton last season, which shows the lack of a consistent goal threat he has.
With 51 crosses delivered for the south coast club last term, this would also put him behind the likes of Gray (57), Andros Townsend (56) and Anthony Gordon (71) at Everton.
Redmond’s overall performances earned him a rather uninspiring season rating of 6.6/10 from WhoScored, which, by the same metric, would leave 13 players at Everton with higher ratings than him last season.
Previously slammed as a “terrible” player by Everton journalist Adam Jones, Redmond would not have been likely to have added much-attacking prowess to Lampard’s squad given the wide attacking players they already have at Goodison.
With all of that in mind, it’s probably for the best that the Toffees didn’t make a move to sign the soon-to-be former Southampton player, even though Lampard’s side are yet to win a league game this season.
