Harry Kane’s long-term injury has cast some serious doubts over his availability for the European Championships this summer, leaving Gareth Southgate with a selection headache as he begins to plan his squad.
Marcus Rashford appears to be the most obvious choice to slot into the team in Kane’s absence, but he too has often featured in more of a wide role under Southgate for England. Meanwhile, the Man United forward has also had some injury concerns of his own to deal with.
Heading into the competition, England fans may have been confident after their performances at the 2018 World Cup, but the injury to Kane could affect their odds with top betting websites like https://www.sportsbetting24.in. The uncertainty of Rashford has led to some debate about who should lead the line for England and that is where Dominic Calvert-Lewin comes in.
Despite now being 22 years of age, the Everton forward is enjoying something of a breakthrough campaign under Carlo Ancelotti, with 12 Premier League goals in 20 domestic starts. While he has been a player that has long been expected to flourish at Goodison Park, he is now beginning to really step up into a regular top-flight striker, leading from the front.
Showcasing his strength in the air and ability to hold the ball up in important areas, Calvert-Lewin could be the best alternative to Kane, if Southgate is looking to find someone in a similar mould to the Tottenham man. He has not yet been capped at senior level for the Three Lions, but has scored goals for his country at U20 and U21 level. While he’s yet to even be named in one of Southgate’s squad, the injury to could be the catalyst that thrusts Calvert-Lewin into the frame for a starting spot at this summer’s Euros.
