Everton’s 3-1 defeat against Manchester City on Wednesday night served to further exacerbate the sourness and concern among the Toffees faithful, with many questioning Carlo Ancelotti and the team’s attitude.
Even the fundamentals of Everton were not spared the microscope as many fans’ scrutiny took hold following a poor run of form which has seen the Merseysiders pick up just one win in their last six league games.
The most optimistic of Everton fans will have accepted that Manchester City, having now won their last 17 games in all competitions, were always going to be a near-insurmountable obstacle, but many would still have hoped for a better performance.
Three long-ranged efforts from Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez and a deflected strike from Bernardo Silva ensured that Ancelotti’s side would be consigned to yet another league defeat.
Everton are left looking ahead to a crunch clash with arch-rivals Liverpool in the Merseyside derby this weekend bereft of any good form, but the gravitas of the derby should not be lost on the squad. Last time out, the squad put in a spirited shift to claim a deserved point against Jurgen Klopp’s side and will be hoping to replicate the combative attitude from that day.
The indignation of many Everton fans as apparent after the City defeat, with many left questioning the tactical approach and work ethic shown by the team which fans will want to see reversed against Liverpool.
Ancelotti and Gylfi Sigurdsson were among those in the firing line, with one fan raging that the Toffees “lack the temerity” to push for greater things in the Premier League. Here is a flavour of the full-time reaction from disgruntled supporters:
Feel sorry for Carlo having to deal with these muppets. We really are looking clueless at the moment. Top 4 definitely gone now and now we’ll have to fight just to get top 6 and if we don’t get that then our season would be a failure
