Yesterday marked a momentous day in the history of British football.
After six of the Premier League’s ‘biggest’ clubs announced their involvement in a proposed European Super League.
Last night saw all six withdraw their involvement after monumentous backlash from the footballing community.
Everton had released their own statement yesterday morning, addressing the situation at that point.
Despite plenty of praise for the statement, it was of course met with hostility from a small group of football fans.
The Liverpool Echo’s Adam Jones addressed the comments, stating that the Toffees shouldn’t have to deal with it.
It does seem ridiculous that even after all of the backlash, there are comments joking that Everton ‘weren’t invited’.
I am sure that if the club even were invited they would turn it down.
Everton have always been a fantastic community club that understands the needs and wants of the fans.
The clubs owners are also switched on and respectful of the relationship with the fan base too.
The European Super League was a hugely damaging concept to the integrity and uniqueness of football.
Despite the damage set by the six club owners, the decision to reverse their involvement had been a huge positive for fans.
Everton set a real tone during the fallout yesterday and the club and fans should be proud.
Football is a sport for the people, and the people have spoken.
