Everton consider offer for United defender Marcos Rojo

Everton have expressed interest in signing Manchester United centre-back Marcos Rojo this summer, but the defender’s wages could prove to be a stumbling block, according to The Telegraph.

José Mourinho is believed to be interested in letting the 28-year old defender leave this month, with the Portuguese boss looking to make space for a new centre back.

Despite only signing a new deal at Old Trafford in March, Rojo has been told he can leave the club this summer, and hasn’t linked up with the rest of the United squad on their USA pre-season tour, despite having exited the World Cup over three weeks ago.

United would expect a bid in excess of £20million to let Rojo go, which would represent a profit on the £16million they paid Sporting Lisbon in 2014. While Everton would certainly be able to meet United’s demands, they would struggle to match Rojo’s current United salary which sits at more than £120,000-a-week, which would disrupt Everton’s current wage structure.

Wolves had also shown an interest in the Argentina international, but the Midlands club were informed that Rojo was not interested in a move to the newly promoted Premier League side.

Marcos Rojo is seen as an alternative option, should Everton fail to land Barcelona defender Yerry Mina, who is also interesting Manchester United. Along with Rojo, the Toffees are considering offers for Middlesbrough’s Ben Gibson and Burnley’s Ben Mee.
