Southampton right-back Cuco Martina is close to signing with the Blues, according to the Echo. The 26-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at the South coast club since the departure of Ronald Koeman. Everton are reportedly in advanced talks to sign the Curaçaoan, who was brought to Southampton by Ronald Koeman and spent much of his youth career at the Dutchman’s old stomping ground Feyenoord.
Koeman has previously hinted at strengthening his squad at the right-back position since the departure of long-serving right-back Tony Hibbert, leaving Seamus Coleman with limited competition other than Everton’s exciting youth players who are happy enough to cover at right-back in a bid to break into the first team. The Dutchman said:
“That’s possible. What I like to have is, really, two players for each position in the team and we need to have that competition to get the best out of each player. That is a possibility.”
Martina plays his international football for Curacao has previously played for FC Twente.
