Everton: Lampard pulled a blinder with Amadou Onana transfer

Everton had a rather busy summer transfer window in terms of the number of players that moved in and out of the Merseyside club.

In addition to making loan deals and free transfers for the likes of Conor Coady, James Tarkowski and Ruben Vinagre, the Toffees also splashed the cash to bring some new faces to Goodison Park such as Dwight McNeil, James Garner, Idrissa Gana Gueye and Neal Maupay.

One other player that Everton managed to bring in for a hefty fee that we feel has been a transfer masterclass from the club and Frank Lampard is Amadou Onana.

Signed from Lille on a five-year deal worth a reported fee of £33m, the Toffees managed to beat their fellow Premier League side, West Ham United, to the midfielder’s signature.

After coming on as a second-half substitute in Everton’s league games against Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, the summer recruit has started all three of the Toffees’ previous league matches, completing the full 90 minutes in the last two.

This shows how fairly quickly it has taken him to convince Lampard he’s good enough to be a regular starter for them.

His latest appearance in the 0-0 draw against Liverpool saw the 21-year-old show what he can do defensively by making seven tackles, three interceptions and winning 11 of the 16 duels he was involved in.

In the Liverpool Echo’s player ratings after Saturday’s stalemate, they said that Everton “have got a player on their hands” with Onana, further highlighting how impressive he is and what a great bit of business it was from them to sign him ahead of West Ham.

This also backs up why football talent scout, Jacek Kulig, described the Belgian as a “huge talent”, on Twitter.

While it’s still early days into his Everton career, the former Lille star has shown the promise he has and the talent he can offer Lampard’s side.
