Everton missed the chance to climb the table when Stoke City put up an impressive fight to overhaul the lacklustre Blues.
Xherdan Shaqiri scored a first-half brace, putting a low shot past Tim Howard as well as a sublime finish over the stranded American, although the shot-stopper could have done better throughout the game.
Romelu Lukaku also scored a brace, a clever bit of play in the Stoke box from the Blues set up the Belgian who put the ball past Jack Butland to make it 1-1. The forward then scored to make it 2-2 when a terrific pass from Tom Cleverley was brilliantly chested into the path of the Belgian, who finished in the bottom corner.
Everton now face Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City in their next two games and at this rate don’t look like picking up wins in either game.
