Former Everton and England centre half Derek Mountfield believes John Stones will one day captain both the Toffees and the Three Lions.
Stones has had an impressive season for Everton despite several injury problems, and has formed an excellent partnership with Phil Jagielka in the centre of defence. He is currently away with the England U21s in the Czech Republic playing in the European Championships, although a training ground collision with goalkeeper Jack Butland has left the youngster with concussion, meaning he’ll play no part in their opening two games of the tournament.
Mountfield though has heaped praise on the former Barnsley man, saying: “John is a young lad who has come in and after just a few games for Everton has got in the England squad.”
“He’s still developing but I think he’s got a great future ahead of him if he keeps listening and learning. A bit like myself he’s prone to mistakes but all you can do it learn from them and become a better player. But his progression over the last 15 months or so has been brilliant. I wouldn’t be surprised if within the next five or six years he’s not only captained Everton but captained his country.”
