DC United boss confirms Rooney interest

DC United head coach Ben Olson has confirmed that his side are indeed interested in signing Everton forward Wayne Rooney, but he has insisted that a deal is far from done.

It has been heavily reported by a plethora of outlets this week that Rooney’s future on Merseyside is uncertain, with DC United interested in signing Rooney as a marquee signing ahead of their move to Audi Field, a newly-built football-specific stadium.

It was reported on Sky Sports earlier this week that a deal had been agreed in principle for the 32-year old, with a reported fee of around £12million having been agreed.

When asked how the deal was going by a TMZ reporter at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Friday, as claimed by Sky Sports, Olson claimed he didn’t know what the reporter was talking about.

When asked a second time though, Olson had this to say;

Certainly the deal is not done but obviously there is some interest from our end.

Rooney had previously been linked with a move to Major League Soccer, having had a number of offers last summer before electing to return to Goodison Park.

But Sky Sports News now understands the deal to move to DC United was drafted over the past seven weeks. The agreement, which runs to the end of the MLS season in 2020, is yet to be signed, but Sky claim it would take a significant change of heart by Rooney and his family to stop the transfer going ahead.
