Everton’s final home game of the season ended in massive disappointment as the Toffees fell to a 3-1 defeat against Sunderland. Everton from chasing Europe, dropped to 12th place in the Premier League table and any hope of European football certainly went down with the final whistle.
Merlin Rohl scored his first Everton goal, putting Everton in front but Sunderland responded through Brian Brobbey, Enzo Le Fee and Wilson Isidor to secure the win. After the match, a frustrated David Moyes delivered a brutally honest assessment.
David Moyes: ‘We didn’t look like a European team’
David Moyes did not hide his disappointment. “We didn’t look like a European team for times in the game today, that’s for sure,” Moyes remarked. “The players have done an amazing job at different times, but it wasn’t [to be] today.”
He was even more direct about the missed opportunity. “We messed up big time today. If we’d had won it, we know things would be different. I think Everton haven’t had the opportunity to be in and around the top end of the league for a while, so that’s the opportunity I’m more disappointed they’ve missed. There was an opportunity to build a big bit of momentum here, but today probably showed we’re not ready for that.”
‘We conceded a very soft first goal’
Moyes analyzed the game’s key moments. “Things didn’t quite go for us at different times. We conceded a very soft first goal. But then we got back into the game and if anyone looked likely to score, it was going to be us. And then we gave away a second goal. We were trying to find a way back into the game and we lost a third.”
The result effectively ended Everton’s slim hopes of European qualification, leaving only the final day trip to Tottenham as a dead rubber.
A final home appearance for Coleman
There was one positive note. Seamus Coleman came on to replace Jake O’Brien for his final home appearance as an Everton player. The captain received a warm reception from the Hill Dickinson crowd. Moyes said: “It was never in doubt he’d get that sort of reception because of what he’s done here. Seamus will be the first to say we’re more interested in the team. He’ll be as disappointed as we are with that game today, certainly at home in front of the Everton supporters.”
Everton must now regroup for the final match of the season at Tottenham. But the damage of this defeat, both in terms of league position and missed momentum, will linger long into the summer but Everton are only to blame themselves for the recent results.
