Coleman can’t wait for next summer

Four more Everton players are looking forward to next summer’s Euro 2016 after Republic of Ireland secured their place last night.

James McCarthy and Seamus Coleman put in dazzling displays in Dublin as Ireland ran out 2-0 winners against Bosnia-Herzegovina in the second leg of their qualifying play-off, securing a 3-1 win on aggregate. Darron Gibson and Aiden McGeady were both unused substitutes at the Aviva Stadium.

Stoke City’s Jonathan Walters was the hero on the night, scoring a first-half penalty which may seen as controversial, before firing his second of the evening 20 minutes from time.

One player who can’t wait to play at Euro 2016 is Seamus Coleman who could not contain his joy at full-time as he described the achievement as the highlight of his international career to date.

“You grow up wanting to be in these tournaments and now I can’t wait,” beamed the right-back.

“From day one, we’ve all believed we can get there. We have had a few difficult moments along the way but what a feeling now – I haven’t experienced anything like that playing for my country.

“In the changing room, when the manager spoke to us, it was an amazing feeling. When you are long gone and retired, these are the moments that you will remember.”

Coleman was overlooked for selection in the final Republic of Ireland squad that headed to Euro 2012 three-and-a-half-years ago but hopes that won’t be the case this time around.

“I was so disappointed to miss out on the last one [tournament], although I have no complaints about not being there,” added the 27-year-old.

“Hopefully I will be in the 23 when we go there [to Euro 2016]. It’s an amazing feeling.”
